General description: The Atropurpurea berberys is a beautiful thorn-covered shrub that grows to about 1.8-2 m high. Its habit is quite compact with a dome shape. It’s ideally suited for planting in urban parks or hedges. Atropurpurea blooms in May with small yellow flowers.
Flowers: Atropurpurea has small, single flowers, sometimes appearing in pairs. The pleasantly fragrant, brownish yellow bloom hangs from horizontally arranged twigs.
Blooming: Atropurpurea blooms in May.
Leaves: Glabrous, purple red.
Cultivation requirements: Atropurpurea doesn’t have high requirements. However, it feels best in sunny or semi-shaded locations. It prefers acidic to moderately alkaline soil. It tolerates periodic drought well.
Pruning: The berberis can be pruned freely to create the desired hedge shape. In spring, damaged and dry stems should be removed. Pruning has a positive effect on the bushiness of the plant.
Overwintering: The berberis tolerate winters in Poland very well - they can withstand temperature drops to -28°C. Although it tolerates frost very well, it is advised to cover young seedlings for winter by making a mound of earth or covering them with non-woven fabric.
Origin: Japan.
