General description
:
Jackmanii is a large-flowered clematis variety with navy-purple flowers. It blooms abundantly from June until July, and repeats flowering from August until September. This variety climbs well on natural supports. It reaches 3-4 m in height.
General description: This variety was introduced on the market in the mid-19th century. The creator was George Jackman & Son, known for producing the Mrs. George Jackman variety.
Flowers: Jackmanii’s flowers are around 10-13 cm in diameter and droop very slightly. They are usually composed of four (sometimes five or six) petals of a navy-purple colour, with cream-coloured anthers on greenish filaments.
Blooming: This clematis blooms profusely from June to July, then in a second, less abundant flush from August to September.
Leaves: Jackmanii has single and pinnately compound leaves.
Cultivation requirements: This is a frost-resistant variety. It grows best in sunny spots but also tolerates semi-shade. Locations near walls with south-eastern or south-western exposure are highly recommended. This clematis needs soil abundant in humus and moisture, with a near-neutral pH (slightly acidic or slightly alkaline) for optimal growth. The substrate must be breathable (heavy, compacted clays are not suitable therefore must be broken up and aerated if no other option is available).
Care: In autumn it is worth covering the base of the plant either with compost or decomposed, old or granulated manure, and in spring applying a mineral fertilizer is recommended. Regular generous watering is needed during the growth season (unless heavy rainfall occurs).
Pruning: Moderate pruning should be carried out in early spring to trim the shrub to a height of about 50 cm. Removing wilted flowers improves the second bloom in autumn.
Props: The Jackmanii clematis is a strong climber and easily creeps up all types of nets, poles, hung ropes, grates and trellises, fences, pergolas and arbours.
Overwintering: This clematis is frost resistant (in hardiness zone 4, withstanding -34°C). Protecting young seedlings for the winter is recommended, by piling a mound of soil or peat about 30 cm in height over the plant. This clematis is a deciduous shrub.
