General description: The Purpurea Plena Elegans was created in 1899 by Francisque Morel in France, the creator of other valued varieties such as the Gravetye Beauty and Ville de Lyon clematis.
Flowers: The Purpurea Plena Elegans has small, full flowers around 6-8 cm in diameter, composed od lanceolate, acutely ended petals of a burgundy purple colour.
Blooming: This variety blooms from June to September, most profusely in July.
Leaves: Leaves are green.
Cultivation requirements: This clematis likes sunny spots, but it also tolerates semi-shade. For optimal growth, the Purpurea Plena Elegans needs slightly moist soil rich in humus, with a neutral or slightly acidic pH. This variety doesn’t like wet soil. The substrate must be breathable (heavy, compacted clays are not suitable). Locations near walls with south-eastern or south-western exposure are highly recommended.
Care: In autumn it is worth covering the base of the plant either with compost or decomposed, old or granulated manure, and in spring applying a mineral fertilizer is recommended. Regular generous watering is needed during the growth season (unless heavy rainfall occurs).
Pruning: Trimming a young clematis plant should not be feared – such pruning forces outward growth right from the base, and as a result the shrub looks denser in later years. The Purpurea Plena Elegans should be pruned moderately heavily. In the spring of the first year after planting, it should be cut just above healthy buds to some 30 cm above ground, in the next couple of springs to around 40 cm above ground, and in later years to a height of around 50 cm.
Props: Thanks to its strong petioles, the Purpurea Plena Elegans easily grows on all kinds of nets, poles, hung ropes, grates and trellises, fences, pergolas and arbours.
Overwintering: This clematis is frost resistant (in hardiness zone 4, withstanding -34°C). Protecting young seedlings for the winter is recommended, for e.g., by piling a mound of soil or peat about 30 cm in height over the plant. This clematis is a deciduous shrub.
