Magnolia ’Susan’

Magnolia ’Susan’

’Susan’ is a cross between Magnolia stellata ’Rosea’ and Magnolia liliflora ’Nigra’

It is a slow-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree that typically reaches up to 2.5 - 3 m in height.

Flowers are bell-shaped, purple-red or fuchsia, with paler tones inside. Blooms shortly before the foliage begins to appear (mid-April to early May) what makes them less likely to be harmed by spring frosts.

Flowers may sporadically repeat bloom in mid-summer.

This shrub is best planted in a sunny to partial sun position, sheltered from wind and in well-drained, moist, slightly acidic and organically reach soil.

It is suitable for lawns, foundations, shrub borders or woodland peripheries. May be grown as a tall informal hedge.

In winter the roots should be protected by piling earth at the base of the plant, and a covering of agricultural fleece.
