General description: The Sadova No1 Chinese magnolia-vine variety reaches up to 10 m in height. It’s one of the most prolific varieties, and its fruit are larger than that that of the common Chinese magnolia-vine. This variety is especially recommended for cultivation in plantations but can also be successfully grown in a home garden. Its fruits are a rich source of vitamins and micronutrients. Chinese magnolia-vine’s berries are colloquially called the five-flavour-fruit because their bloom is sweet, their flesh is sour, seeds are bitter and tart, and the seeds’ extracts have a salty taste. The berries are suitable both for direct consumption directly after being picked, as well as for making preserves.
Flowers: The Chinese magnolia-vine has small, with flowers clustered in inflorescences.
Blooming: This vine blooms in May and June.
Leaves: The Chinese magnolia-vine’s leaves are dark green.
Fruit: Berries are small, spherical and red.
Ripening: The berries of Sadova No1 ripen in August and September. The first harvest can be expected some 5-6 years after planting.
Cultivation requirements: Chinese magnolia-vines grow best in sunny locations. They tolerate moist, fertile soils as well as average garden soils with a slightly acidic pH.
Pruning: Pruning can be conducted to form the vine when it has grown too large, but over-pruning can weaken fruiting. In early spring, damaged and withered stems should be removed.
Overwintering: This variety does great in temperate European climes. It withstands temperatures of down to - 26°C. Protecting young seedlings by piling a mound of soil with peat about 30 cm in height over the plant, or shielding them with agrotextiles for the winter, is advised.
